Ellis Ainley
Ms. Ellis Ainley is an outgoing master’s student at Oxford University, working in the group led by Prof. David Lucas. She traveled to the University of Oregon from (Jul. 23 to Sep. 17), to initiate a new collaboration between with the groups of Prof. David Allcock and Prof. David Wineland.
In this exchange, Ellis worked on the sympathetic cooling of a metastable qubit based the 43Ca+ ion qubit platform, along with a second ion of the same species. In Ellis’s work, she worked on laser beam alignment, polarization control, design and programming of pulse sequences, temperature and cooling rate measurements, and verification of qubit coherence during cooling.
This experience provided Ellis with important experimental training that will benefit her as she starts as a Ph.D. student at Oxford in the Fall of 2023.
