International Research and Training Experience (IRTE)

The International Research and Training Experience (IRTE) is a structured summer research program where undergraduates (and in some cases graduate students and postdocs) travel as a group to a research institution abroad to gain valuable research experience, while also learning about another culture. The GQL provides stipend, travel and housing support for these activities and students work in the labs of world-leading experts in quantum devices, materials and architectures.

Since the summer of 2022, we have succesfully held annual exchanges with the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba Japan, and Matter and Light 4 Quantum Computing in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

Selections for the 2025 cohort are now open. For full application materials please contact our program administrator Jordan Schwed at jschwed@umn.edu.
